MATERIALS AND CRAFTSMANSHIP
Guiding principles for production
Thoughtful artisanal handiwork over mass production.
Take good care of what you value and love. This goes for your home, body, garden, family, community, planet.
Value the time, energy, and resources it takes to hand make something. Artisan and skilled craftsmanship is a lost art. It’s essential to keep it alive through our own knowledge or through the support of others.
Connection and relationships are essential when selecting materials. Know the chain of supply.
Reuse and repurpose materials already in circulation.
Textiles, for me, are one of the most sophisticated expressions of artistry utilizing nature and human skill. How we have taken fibers and developed the techniques to weave, how we have discovered and utilized plants, minerals, and crustaceans for color, and how each culture has expressed themselves through the beauty and style of textiles is fascinating. Textiles reveal how beautiful and unique we are as imaginative and creative people. To share this, Surround Life sources both old and new materials from around the world creating custom pieces for you and your home. The first collections showcase the rich weaving traditions in India.
Wood is incredible. The grain captures memory and history. It reflects the environment from which it came, the Sierras or the Amazon. It provides abundance in both its living and milled state. Our lives are intimately connected to wood. Perhaps more than we even realize. Surround Life sources raw lumber locally in New Mexico. We haul it to our workshop where we design, plane, clamp, sand, oil, etc. Through our small batch collections, we offer unique, one of a kind, hand made boards to enhance your (or another) kitchen and craft.
